Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly

The Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly was a World War II-era ground attack aircraft, developed by Beechcraft but was never put into production. It was intended to replace the Douglas A-20 Havoc and could hit hardened targets LIKE tanks and bunkers, as well as attack coastal shipping. For this, it was fitted with a forward-firing 75 mm cannon to penetrate heavily armored targets, plus two .50 cal M2 Browning machine guns in the nose. Defensive armament consisted of remotely controlled ventral and dorsal turrets, each armed with twin .50 cal machine guns, operated by an observer/gunner in the rear cabin.

The first prototype flew on 7 May 1944, but testing established that the type would not be ready for the projected invasion of Japan. It featured Wright R-3350 engines already in use with the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, which had priority. Consequently, the XA-38 was canceled after a second prototype had been completed, and no production was ordered.

The USAAF awarded Beech the contract to develop two prototypes of the Model 28, not as a bomber-destroyer but as a ground-attack aircraft, designated Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly. Beech Aircraft Corporation built the most robust ground attack aircraft of World War II - the XA-38 Grizzly, which was fitted with a forward-firing 75 mm cannon.

The Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly was a twin-engine ground attack and light bomber aircraft. The XA-38 was a two-place, mid-wing aircraft with a slim fuselage and twin tails, and it was intended to replace the Douglas A-20 Havoc. The Grizzly was armed with a 2.95 inch cannon (75 mm) and six 12.7 mm machine guns (0.50-caliber).
